visualisation research and content creation
This site is currently undergoing a migration from Drupal to WordPress – so this means quite a bit of redesign, cutting and pasting, re-organising graphics and video, wrangling with CSS, MySQL and PHP code and so on. The motive was simple: Drupal was overkill for the type of site I need/want to run – even though I’ve used it for many years and it has proved very solid; simply-put WordPress is far simpler to maintain and has a much more user-friendly interface and ease of update. There will be a few glitches here and there as I port everything over – but they will be sorted out over time.
Another benefit is that – as WordPress is more obviously oriented towards a blogging modality (unlike Drupal – as a full-blown CMS) – I am confident of updating the content far more regularly – and flowing content from blog posts onto more static pages as projects develop. Drupal proved rather cumbersome in this respect, so I hope to strike a balance between more- and less-formal content.
The final trick I’m keen on is to exploit the email-to-blog feature of WordPress (though this may prove tricky with the theme I’m using – we’ll see!) – as this will enable me to continue updating the site when I am in Antarctica during Dec 2009 – Feb 2010.
