Mawson’s Huts 2009-2010 Expedition
The Mawson’s Huts Foundation 2009-2010 Expedition will depart Tasmania on December 2nd 2009 – returning around January 28th- Feb 1st, 2010.
I am the official photographer, videographer and film-maker, undertaking both documentary work and creating my own fulldome feature about the Huts, Antarctica and the oceans.
In pursuit of cutting-edge visualisation I’m taking a wide array of sophisticated technologies with me, including:
1] A stereoscopic fulldome computer-controlled timelapse rig (using two 21 megapixel Canon 5D Mk II cameras) and Sigma 8mm fisheye lenses. This travels along a self-built 6m dolly track, fondly named “The Hurley Dolly’ – it was created in concert with Dr Chris Henderson, engineer-extraordinaire. Thanks also to Roger Handsworth (AAD) and James of Gentled. Canon equipment was in part sponsored by Canon Australia – many thanks.
2] A Trimble VX LIDAR scanner generously supplied by Ultimate Positioning. This will enable the first ever high-definition 3D scan of the huts and environment.
3] A Gigapan system generously supplied by Research Computing Services, University of Melbourne.
4] A variety of KAP (kite aerial photography) radio-controlled stereoscopic rigs using Canon SX200 IS cameras – thanks to Canon for the cameras. The systems were engineered by Chris, with kites made by Sally Hildred.
5] A BGAN broadband unit for videoblogging – generously sponsored by Telstra.
6] A satellite webcam system, sending daily pictures from the Huts. Thanks to the many people who participated in this complex invention. Sponsorship also from Telstra (Iridium sat. phones).
We will be keeping a blog of the expedition at the Mawson’s Huts Foundation website:
