Virtual Macquarie Island

UPDATE: VMI has been awarded Commonwealth development funding through the Visions of Australia program. The Minister’s media release is here.

This is brief preview (v0.1) of a project I’ve been working on in my spare time, on and off – a high-resolution simulation of Macquarie Island. After a while living in Unity, it’s finally coming to life in Unreal Engine.

v0.5 is currently on exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

This is a very rough first (well, 12th+) – technical draft, demonstrating 8k texture streaming, Unreal’s blueprint and terrain modelling functions and rendering. It’s a complete game-changer, and blows open the doors to things I’ve wanted to do for years.

Below is a technical demonstration using Cesium for Unreal.

A more detailed work-in-progress post will be available soon.
